Herbal medicine involves using herbs to treat many illnesses such as pms, indigestion, cancer, heart disease, skin disorders, anxiety, diarrhea, constipation, insomnia, etc. Herbs are derived from dried plant product. Some believe that herbs can be just, if not more, effective than conventional drugs. Some experts even believe that herbs hold the answer to things like cancer cures. However, there is a lot of money to be made from laboratory-produced drugs but very little to be made from herbs (which are readily available, and can not be patented).
One of the most common form of herb, in today's industrialized world, is perhaps what we commonly call herbal teas. Green tea possibly being the most common. Herbs can also come in capsules, tablets, oils, extracts, and ointments.
There are over 100 types of herbs. This is a list of some of the most common ones that most of us are familiar with:
- Aloe Vera (for skin problems)
- Chamomile (consumed as a tea and helps with digestion)
- Ginger (helps with digestion)
- Ginseng (antioxidant, and helps one deal with stress)
- Peppermint (assists with digestion)
- St. John's Wort (an anti-inflammatory)
Before purchasing herbs for personal use make sure you have a trustworthy supplier. And you may want to do additional research.
A related type of medicine is Homeopathy, has been around for almost 200 years. It involves using natural substances, derived from plants and minerals, to cure such diseases as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, and allergies, just to mention a few. Similar to other forms of alternative medicine, homeopathy focuses on curing the body from the inside out, rather than just curing the symptoms.
