It is believed that acupuncture began in China over four thousand years ago. It involves the belief that all living organisms have life energy flowing through them, sometimes called Tai'chi. There are 12 meridians (energy pathways), with each meridian linked to organs. When the energy is not flowing properly then disease is present. By using the acupoints along the meridian pathway energy flow is corrected, and the organs begin to function properly.

Treatment involves inserting very thin, thread-like, needles into specific points on the body. Only a few are used per person there are over 1000 points available.Although the patient may feel the needle enter there is no major pain or discomfort. Obviously a great deal of practice is needed to perfect this technique.

A similar technique is acupressure. It involves putting pressure on specific body parts, using fingers, hands, or elbows. The theory is the same as that of acupuncture.

Although acupuncture has been around for hundreds of years, its effectiveness is controversial. This does not mean that it is ineffective, but it can mean that it is difficult, in today's traditional medical world, to scientifically prove its effectiveness.

Some of the illnesses that acupuncture can be used for include:

  • Headaches
  • Back ache
  • Sinusities
  • Colds
  • Digestive problems
  • Certain brain damage conditions
  • Arthritis
  • Menopause
  • Depression
